Last week was spent finishing up our seascape paintings. They are up in the hallway now for everyone to enjoy, and they have already received quite a few compliments! Viewers have pointed out how the waves seem to move as you walk towards or away from the paintings, making the project a great success. Everyone agrees that first grade did a wonderful job using their lines to create motion!
This week, we came back to land to work on the beginnings of a simple still-life. We spent a while studying the way circles are turned into spheres, and the way light sources effect value. We always drew a sunshine somewhere on our papers as a reminder of where the light was coming from every time we tried to draw a sphere. Yesterday, the entire class succeeded in drawing a shading in a sphere! We’ll be moving on to cubes next week as the subject of our actual still-life projects.
